The mental & physical benefits of swimming for kids starting learn to swim at a young age
If children cannot swim, they are missing out as it’s nearly impossible to go through life with all the enjoyable water activities all around us. There are endless benefits that come with knowing how to swim. Water activities will be part of their lives if they have learned to swim and have fun in the water as children. Your child should begin learning to swim at the earliest age possible. Swimming is the best low impact, high resistance, full body exercise a child can do.
Children who learn to swim tend to develop both fine and gross motor skills faster than non-swimming children. When swimming, the child uses the entire body, so it’s a great activity to help them with coordination.
Water offers resistance and will help to build muscle and spending time in the pool will help your child improve their coordination and balance. Swimming is also great for cardiovascular health and will help strengthen your child’s heart, lungs, brain, and blood vessels.
Learning to swim will help your child to become confident and independent, especially mastering a skill in an element (water) that could be a danger. They will have greater self-control, a stronger desire to succeed and better self-esteem.
A four-year study of more than 7,000 children specifically, the 3- to 5-year-olds who swam were ahead of the normal population in verbal skills, math skills, literacy skills, story recall and understanding directions.
How Long Will It Take To Learn to Swim?
Aquawolf swim club is not motivated by money. We are driven by passion…your child’s progress is vital to our coaches. Nothing satisfies us more to see these wonderful athletes develop into strong charactered individuals.
The basics of swimming are divided into a series of progressions. Each little swimmer must master specific skills before progressing on to the next level, regardless of the child’s age.
First the 2 B‘s … breathing (get face wet and blowing bubbles) and bonding with the coach. Then starting with basic floats, (back float very important) then moving to glides, glides with kicks, and eventually full stroke development. Developing good swimming habits is key to developing strong efficient swimmers.
How Long Will It Take To Learn to Swim? Once a child begins the process of learning to swim, consistency is key. For a child afraid of water, learning to swim may take longer.
Every child is different and this is a very debatable subject. For children 3 years & older with no previous swimming experience, it will take approximately 6 months to one year to learn to be safe in the water (24-52 swim lessons)
The younger children start to learn to swim, the faster they will learn to swim. If they start swimming lessons later in life, the water-confidence building stage may take much longer. It’s important to have realistic expectations and grant children enough time in the water to practice skills and have fun.
Our operating hours – Currently (due to covid-19) we are coaching on Mondays, Wednesdays & Fridays between 13h00 – 18h00. Hopefully we can soon offer 6 days a week as we did in the past. But the safety of our children is vital.
How long are the lessons? – We offer a free trial lesson. Once your child is accessed and both parent & child feel comfortable with the total atmosphere at our facility, the coach will advise whether the child must have one on one lessons which are 15 min, or if the child is ready to be placed in a group activity which is 30 min. Progression is key and you can be assured of the best attention to detail for your child. Swimming lessons are offered once or twice a week.
Should my child swim once or twice a week? – Obviously, twice a week is better for progression, but swimming lessons are an expensive extra mural activity and we suggest you do what you can afford.
What equipment does my child need? – Girls – fitted full piece swimsuit (not a sun-suit or bikini) – Boys – fitted briefs, trunk or jammer (not a boardshorts or sun-suit)
A swim cap and goggles are required when they commence swimming. As they progress they will need flippers and a kickboard. These items are available from Aquawolf at an affordable price as we buy direct from a wholesaler.
How much does swimming lessons cost? Our lessons are based on school terms. No coaching during school holidays or on public holidays. However, we do plan to offer clinics during school holidays. Parents have the option of paying per school term at a reduced price or if preferred, monthly. Aquawolf gives a discount if a family has more than 1 child attending our lessons.
